MT435 Unit 3: Product Design and Service Design - Discussion
1. Product and Service Design
Product and Service Design
The two perspectives of operations management are products and services. This week, you will look at the element of design applied to operations management via product design and service design.
Please answer the following together, in a single original post:
- Select one element of product design and apply it to a product you would like to see created in the marketplace.
- Select one element of service design and apply it to a real world scenario you have observed recently in a local business environment.
Make sure you are supporting your answers fully and that your source research is identified with citations and references.
Design for robustness is an element of product design which makes product withstand variations in environmental and operating conditions. Focusing on robustness can demand changes in the material use, design and slight change of the functionality. I would like to see robust laptop in the market that can withstand the fall of 5 ft. For this, the high tolerance is important, but the manufacturer needs to understand that minimum functionality is impacted.
Service specification element of service design focuses on performance specification, design specification and delivery specification (Russell, R. S., & Taylor-Iii, B. W. 2008). The motive is to increase the productivity/efficiency while decreasing the waiting time period. For an example, in a local club I used to visit, there was a pool table and during weekend because of heavy rush people tend to go back. As per the service specification element, club removed the pool table and introduced a new dance floor, which all together increased the space for customers. As a replacement of pool, club got foosball and dart game, which is generally not available during the heavy rush.

Unit 2: Journal
You will complete a Journal each week.
Each week, you will work on one aspect that will help you prepare for the course and reflect. Consider this Journal as study notes. This Journal will provide an opportunity to capture new ideas from knowledge gained and record your thoughts throughout the course. This will also give you an opportunity to record questions you may wish to research further in preparation for other assigned work. Please remember that copying and pasting your own notes without revising is a form of self-plagiarism.
Unit 3: Product Design and Service Design
Research the following topics related to product design and service design:
- Benchmarking
- Reverse engineering
- Specification
- Queue
- Goods
Select three of the topics listed and compose 3 paragraphs describing the topics (1 paragraph per selected topic) based on the course material and additional research you conduct online.
