There are three basics types of hackers. White hats (hacking for good) and black hats (hacking for bad) are terms to describe the motive for the hacking. The term grey hacking is about behavior that is in between these two descriptions. It’s illegal to hack into a system without authorization. However, is it ethical for anyone to hack a system if the intent is to help it become more secure?

Read the Network World article looking at a recent case of white hat hacking (At what point do white hats cross the ethical line? document). Some experts consider this type of hack an essential part of securing an environment. White hatters expose vulnerabilities before they’re discovered by the legitimate security personnel or IT professional supporting the systems. They are committing a crime, but should the law be modified if good comes from the security flaws that are exposed? What is the dividing line between legal and illegal hacking?

Please write your opinion based on two viewpoints - one being the software developer (of the code that was hacked) working as an employee for the Boeing Corporation and the other as the pilot on an airplane that was hacked. Express your concerns and/or support if you feel that this type of hacking should be consider "for the good" or if it has crossed the ethical line.
