Choose one of the following questions to deconstruct:
1. Why is it that Aboriginal people who have ‘mixed blood’ are the ones who
succeed in life?
OR
2. Why don’t Aboriginal people take an interest in their own health?
Scope
The Deconstruction Exercise requires that you deconstruct or ‘unpack’ the chosen question, rather than answer it directly. This is an opportunity to further develop and apply your critical thinking skills, particularly in relation to your learning in Weeks 4 and 5. The purpose is to critically analyse and discuss the radicalized assumptions and stereotypes within the questions, drawing on the broader literature to support your critique. A range of resources and tutorial activities will assist you in developing the skills and knowledge's necessary to deconstruct your chosen question.
The Deconstruction Exercise should provide a critical discussion of the following:
• Who is asking the question? What evidence is there to support this?
• Racialism stereotypes
- What they are
- Where they come from
• The underlying assumptions being made
- About groups of people
- About the meaning and interpretation of key concepts
